Xcel Energy prepares for likely Public Safety Power Shutoff, working to limit customer impact

Customers outside PSPS may also be impacted by wind, power outages

DENVER— (December 16, 2025)— Xcel Energy continues to refine the areas and number of customers impacted by a likely Public Safety Power Shutoff (PSPS) tomorrow, December 17. The PSPS, is being considered to reduce the risk of wildfire, keeping communities and customers safe. Weather forecasts include very high winds and dry conditions along the Front Range. The National Weather Service has issued a Red Flag Warning for this weather event.

Xcel Energy is planning for a likely PSPS beginning around 10 a.m., impacting around 52,000 customers in Boulder, Clear Creek, Jefferson, Larimer and Weld counties. Risk assessments based on the latest forecast data and advanced modelling tool outputs, as well as recent improvements to grid infrastructure, have enabled us to reduce the size of the affected areas. Due to changing weather conditions, the PSPS event is now expected to begin at 10 a.m. rather than at 12 noon.

The weather conditions necessitating a PSPS are expected to start improving around 6 p.m. Wednesday, though high winds that may create wildfire risk and cause outages are expected to continue through Friday.

Please note, due to anticipated high winds, outages could take place outside of areas impacted by the PSPS, impacting restoration times. After a PSPS or when there are other weather-related outages across the system, power restoration efforts will begin after high winds and elevated fire risks have ended. It may take several hours to several days for customers’ power to be restored because a crew must patrol the entire power line to ensure it’s safe to turn service back on before a power line can be re-energized.

Xcel Energy’s goal is to limit the impact of a PSPS event as much as possible while effectively managing high wildfire risk. Xcel Energy will share further updates on the PSPS event tomorrow morning, and through the event. Customers can find event updates and tips to prepare, stay safe, report outages and stay informed when severe weather strikes on the Xcel Energy Event Update webpage

Xcel Energy will continue to reach out to potentially affected customers as the forecasted weather event approaches and will update customers throughout the weather event with outage and restoration information. Customers can look up their address online to find out whether they may be subject to a PSPS event.
