Power lines are down around Boulder County. If you see a downed power line, stay at least 30 feet away, assume it’s live and dangerous, and immediately call 911 to report it as an electrical emergency.
Never touch the line or anything it touches.
If you are on foot:
– Keep your distance: Stay at least 30 feet (about three car lengths) away from the line and anything it’s touching, including puddles or metal objects, as electricity can travel through the ground.
– Move safely: If you need to move, shuffle away with small steps, keeping your feet together and on the ground to minimize shock risk.
– Warn others: Alert passersby to stay away from the area. Keep pets away.
– Call for help: Dial 911 and tell the operator it’s an electrical emergency.
– Contact your utility company: Once you are safely away notify the electric company.
If you are in a vehicle:
– Stay inside: Remain in your vehicle, as it acts as an insulator.
– Call 911: Tell the dispatcher you are in a vehicle with a downed line.
– Warn people: Honk your horn to keep people away.
– If you must exit (e.g., fire): Open the door, stay on the door, and jump clear, landing with your feet together. Then shuffle away from the car.
What NOT to do:
– Do not touch: the line or anything it’s touching (fences, poles, water).
– Do not drive over: a downed line.
– Do not try to move: the line with an object like a broom.
– Do not approach: someone in contact with a line; call 911 for help.
