Downed Power Line Safety – Drive Carefully at Night

Some power lines remain down. Many streetlights are still out, so drive slowly and carefully to avoid hazards. Crews are responding as quickly and safely as they can.

If you see a downed power line with no crews or closures: stay at least 30 feet away, assume it’s live and dangerous, and call 911.

Never approach or touch a downed power line, or anything it touches. Do not drive over or try to move a downed line. If someone comes in contact with a line, call 911 for help.

If you encounter a downed power line while driving:
– Stay inside: Remain in your vehicle, as it acts as an insulator.
– Call 911: Tell the dispatcher you are in a vehicle with a downed line.
– Warn people: Honk your horn to keep people away.
– If you must exit your vehicle (e.g., fire): Open the door, stay on the door, and jump clear, landing with your feet together. Then shuffle away from the car.
