After the Dec. 17 power outages, Boulder County residents should check their food. Throw away perishable food that was above 40°F.
FOOD DISPOSAL
All Boulder County residents can bring their spoiled food to Western Disposal Materials Management Center for FREE to have it properly disposed.
If residents have curbside compost collection at their homes, they can toss their spoiled food there, after removing from the packaging.
• Food brought to Western can stay in the packaging, but there can be no glass containers.

FOOD SAFETY TIPS
With high winds and possible power shutoffs expected again tomorrow, residents should prepare now to keep food safe.
Before an outage
• Set your refrigerator to 40°F or below and your freezer to 0°F
• Freeze water or ice packs to help keep food cold
• Keep frozen foods together
• Have a food thermometer ready
During an outage
• Keep refrigerator and freezer doors closed
• Open the refrigerator only if needed
• Food stays safe for:
•Up to 4 hours in a refrigerator
• 48 hours in a full freezer
• 24 hours in a half-full freezer
After power is restored
• Check food temperatures
• Throw away food above 40°F
• Food with ice crystals or that feels cold may be safe
• When in doubt, throw it out
